I am in a situation where I need to take some files and place them on a flash drive. The drive will go to another person that can use it freely. However, I am looking for a way to ensure that the few files that I placed on there cannot be deleted or modified. Does anyone know of a way to protect files on a flash drive, when the drive moves to another computer?

Not these particular drives. They are pretty generic.

You could always back them up to your main computer.

There's really no way to make them permanently read-only. The way you do that is to burn a CD.

just make the files READ ONLY, you could even make them HIDDEN if the other user doesn't need access to them... yeah i know anybody can right click on a file and change it's properties, but that would atleast prevent ACCIDENTIAL deletion. just a thought...

    later,

There are actually several branded drives that will be given away to certain people. The drives have a folder with information about the company in it. I would like this folder to be somewhat tamper-proof, as it would be a big headache to get those files back for some of the people. I understand that security would not stay when the drive is plugged into another computer, as that information is stored in the local registry.

I was hoping there is a free program out there to do this, but it doesn't look like it.

Change the attributes of the files to Read-Only then you can put them on a .zip or .rar and put a password on it.

but then again they can just delete the whole zip file but at least they cant modify it

archive the file then hide it. increased protection, but again..can be bypassed easily.

mini-cd or dvd as an alternate?

an autorun program that will the responsible for displaying and opening the files contained in the drive (possible), make those files read-only (possible) and restrict people from being able to explore the contents of the drive (not sure about this one).
