I just tried to move a 700 mb movie from H: to D:
what i get i ll call as WSOD: White screen of death.

And few minutes ago someone mentioned that Sp1 was made to improve File transfer.
SO i ask.. What the **** is this?
-
-
I did tell you to backup before upgrading, didn`t I?
Might just be some tthose ever so familiar conflicts at the beginng of the SP1`s life,as any SP update for that matter.
Just wait on it, reboot and maybe it`ll go away. -

Would you need to have SP1 installed to get SP2?
or can you install SP2 directly when it DOES get released?
Thing is, SP1 still hasn't appeared in Windows Update for my Toshiba... and i'm too lazy to manually download the 400MB download file. -
Man, dont bother..
If u dont like Vista... get XP or move to some other platform.
I am telling u.... i am on SP1 now..and got a horrific crash while just transferring a single File.
How can u justify this? its 2008 & one & a half year since Vista release.. Transferring a SINGLE file crashing an entire OS is a slap on the face of MS.
What are they doing? releasing stupid anti-piracy updates & not doing anything about the Core Vista problems.
It was a Total WSOD. -
-
I did a Ctrl + X > went to D: & pressed CTRL + V
I was transferring my DVD rip of a movie..weighing 700 MB.
On XP SP2...i have done 35 GB transfer in 8-12 minutes. -

As I remember you were not getting SP1 through Windows Update. Wasn't this because you had one of the bad drivers. And now that you have installed SP1 and did NOT update the drivers, I have a feeling you are seeing why SP1 was not being offered originally through WU.

Let me just say that **** happens, live with it. Sorry for being blunt, but if you hate Vista (And God knows I've had it with Vista haters.) because of a simple "whateverSOD" then hear this; It happens in XP too. Killed two of my HDs, a BSOD loop, how's that? XP is not perfect, Vista is not perfect and OSX is not perfect either. Happens to all of us, a hickup in the system, bad driver, faulty hardware or just a stupid user.

Hi.
Even pen and paper crashes, thats why they have erasers on pencils

Nocturnal , we`ve all been through this.
SP1 is nowhere near perfect, but when it does work, it beats having the older Vista.
File transfers and stuff went better even with the RC1 in my case.
Just wait on it, let the computer get used to SP1. Believe it or not, it takes time for Vista to install itself properly into the computer, and I suspect SP1 has the same behaviour. -
someone recommend to NOT do manual so i waited & did via WU.
but since u guys say it ll get fine... then i am ready to wait.
Thanks.
Will keep u posted if i get more crashes. -
transferring files on Vista sucks. Transfer 4gb from xp to vista and it took 30 mins.
-
SP1 fixes that exact issue. Nocturnal, it`s software related, just wait on it.
SP1 is good, it really improves Vista.
Sp3 for XP for example changes nothing as far as I`m concerned... -
LOL! This WSOD has nothing to do with Vista. You are not the first one to experience this either! This used to happen in XP as well. I tried working with HP to find a solution but as expected it didnt go anywhere. This is a problem which is common to the 6150/6100 series. Blame Nvidia/HP for making such crappy stuff. There are few other people who experienced this issue on the 6150/6100 series in the HP forums. My current theory on this is that the GPU overheating(along with the other problems) is causing this as this occurs both in XP and Vista, this issue hasnt re-occured on my system in quite a while(3-4months) but does happen once in a while. If it happens regularly just keep on contacting HP and maybe you will get lucky.

Dont worry.
I am selling my laptop & getting a new one. -

It's a Geeky world at linux.
hmm.. I am a linux n00b.
Wanna recommend me a Linux distro ..and source for Drivers? -
Start a thread in the linux forums, and post alll of your specs!
-
-
This looks like a hardware issue than a software issue. I was gonna say this has occured even before Vista, but Miner beat me to it.
-
-
transfering files on my vista pc is faster now that i got SP1 soo i don't know what u'll are complaining about maybe u're not telling us everything
-
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though. Nocturnal310 is a Vista hater though. Read his past posts and this thread makes more sense. -
It's a trend these days that people start blaming vista for everything that goes wrong with their vista PC's.
But the truth is Vista Rocks -
miner is right, the video card is the problem, try googling your problem and stuff. its nvidia, your video card sucks and rightly so that you sell it
shame nvidia has a bunch of problems later but its not such a damper, more annoyance. good luck tho -
I recommend installing SP1 on a fresh system or integrated (even better), it seems to cause issues and conflicts with a bloated up system.
I did a 50gb transfer from ext hd to another ext hd. It took about 25mins or so
or switch to linux, its rock stable and less worries about nasty viruses and malware -
I really LOVE how:
It crashes on your computer so AUTOMATICALLY EVERY vista computers are affected.
The file transfer between computers is strange though. When I transfer over wireless at 36~54mbps, I get about 1.5MB/s. If I plug the 2 computers over wire at 100mbps, it jumps to 12 -
now that there are multiple complaints about XP SP3 hope you'll will stop complaining since all the OS's got problems no matter how better they say it is
-
I suggest going to linux instead of OS X. everything is so easy going in linux. I didnt have to install any drivers at all for my notebook and everything was fully funtional already. Its nearly got everything you need pre-installed
Ubuntu w/ compiz fusion totally destroys Aero. Especially when you can have 4 desktops in a cube to switch around.

Linux requires abit of a read up and research though. Its not what you assumed it to be before -
I for one did not notice anything, neither improvements or problems. -
Well, from what I heard on TV/Radio, many people are on a 1+ years old XP installation got problems such as loop restard
SP3 is a compilation of all the updates, and there were conflicts with some of the older updates -
Service packs are best installed on a fresh system or an integrated install -
Point taken.
But I`ll be rejoining the Vista ranks again pretty soon. I want to give it a chance again, since SP3 did all it could for me. -
Now, I'm not going to spread any Linux hate here. But I just have to say that my experience with Linux, UBUNTU, of all the distros- has been nothing but catastrophic. No WLAN drivers for my Broadcom card, no drivers for my Atheros card, no drivers for my 3G modem, no nothing. Linux is not easy for new users if they have to poke around in the terminal, install dependencies via that thing and whatnot just to get their WLAN up and running. I read 15+ tutorials for these two cards and the 3G modem. NO luck. -
Don`t get side-tracked,Linux questions are in another place.
Strictly Windoze questions here -
-
Less than two weeks ago. I was hoping Ubuntu 8.04 would fix the driver issues. But nah, they still don't support the cards I have. Anyhow... I'm not going to try Ubuntu again anytime soon tho. I just wanted to see what it was like, that's all.
Vista for me. -
You should have done some searching....I have a broadcom card, it works, and with a little searching, everything else should. Try starting a thread in the linux section.
Also, have you tried Mint? It's got better hardware support then Ubuntu.
EDIT: If you only tried the Live Cd, then thats your problem -
Believe me, I checked many topics and tutorials. I just couldnt get it to work. Perhaps Id have better luck now, but right now I dont feel like changing OS. And I installed it several times, never used the Live CD.
Iit was JUST to test another OS.None of the programs I use work in Linux, so I can't really use it anyways.
-
-
Mint is free.
The broadcom drivers are not, thus you won't see them OTB. You have to either transfer it through USB or get it while connected through LAN -
Your pc blows.
-
Lol im not really a specific os hater (as you see in my sig)
Trust me, they all have their own problems -
Guys this is not a "Best OS" thread.

There`s nothing wrong in pointing out certain advantages a certain OS might have...as long as it`s XP
