    Dear all

I'm having a known problem , but i have tried different ways to recover some of my important files . here is the story

The computer hanged during working in Microsoft Internet Explorer. so i decided to restart. the problem started, the computer is not starting normally, so i went to the safe mode to start , it is not starting, then it give me the option to fix the start up files ( Windows Vista option) but it did not work, try to go to last knowo condition, it does not work.. and finally i reached to a stage where there is no operating software, the laptop is starting up then rebooting by it self, and it goes into cycle of reboots.. doest not reach to windows strat up window.

then i start to look for starting up with a bootable CD.. i manage to find one good software which allow me to access through the DOS.. and could see the harddisk with all the files...

also managed to copy some of the file to my external HDD, that was good even though not direct, i had to copy file by file as it was not accepting the command [ copy *.* ], .. but at least could communicate to the harddisk..

I have one file which is the .pst file for the outlook, the size is around 2.3GB .. i know it is big, i'm trying to copy this file but when ever i try to copy it give me question mark and says file not found... like this ??????.???

tried to rename the file, manage to rename the file but could not copy it..

tried to use the XCOPY command, but was not successful.

i took it to the dealer and they say that they can not retreive the data.. and need to reformat the harddisk...

i still think there is a way since i can access the hard disk through the DOS..

any one has any idea how to copy large files through the DOS,

I have an idea but i will loose the warrenty if i used it, which is taking the hrad disk out , plug it into cable to be like external HDD, and try to access it using another computer..

is there any software in DOS to be able to copy the files to another HDD.

Laptop is Dell Latitue 630 , Windows Vista Business

    waiting the experts..

you can try a Linux live cd. Dos is bad at handling big files. Linux is not great for NTFS file systems but it does work. Plus it will give you a graphical interface to make things easier.

Removing the harddrrive and putting it in another machine will not void the warranty.

I would do that just to take a look at it

Another option is Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset, 30 day evaluation. It's basically the same thing as ERD Commander.
