i once read that if you put a file in the desktop, it will be loaded into the system memmory, and cause the computer to take a performance hit.

    is this true?

if i put my files in a folder on my desktop will i still take a performance hit? eg. create new folder in my desktop, and drop all my files in that.

if i put a shortcut on the desktop, will it still take up the performance?

I don't think that is true. Perhaps the thumbnails will be placed in memory, but as long as your desktop isn't a huge cluttered mess, you should have no problems.

I've already had my screen full of picture files until it was off the screen (due to an forgetting to rename where to place my multiple image downloads). There were also heavy files on my desktop in their own folders as well. I didn't experience any change in performance when running any other programs alongside.

Windows Explorer treats the desktop pretty much like any other folder.

Hmm I think I heard about this back when I had Windows 98. Don't think it applies much to the newer operating systems.

Nope. I've had tons of stuff stored on desktop before, with no ill effects (with a 1.3GHz centrino, and max RAM of 768MB, I am quite sure I would have noticed if the 20GB of image files I once had stored on the desktop were getting loaded into system memory :D).

Maybe, but it is not true on Mac's either. No OS treats the desktop files as something to be loaded into memory at boot time.

actually i've always tried to keep my desktop clean because i hated the mess which usually happened to be there as soon as i forgot to be really strict.

then, i've created a special folder in my documents, called "mess from the desktop". and from time to time, i throw there everything from the desktop except of shortcuts. and anytime i cannot find something, i can bet that it would be there...

...but it's not a matter of speed, rather trying to keep it "nice".

i also think its from old times, 16mb of ram and 20gb hd.....zzzz
default for many downloads was the desktop so it was full of setup files, mp3s etc. disk would fill up and be slower to login/update the desktop, redrawing icons etc. i do try to keep my desktop fairly clean just so i can see my background picture. my 2c

"Desktop" is just a folder, you can find it in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop and it's not loaded into memory.
