Am wondering, streaming yt music on w10 (ltsc), firefox keeps a quite low cpu %, but a constant high cpu speed, around 2.5 Ghz, & fan kicks in and stays on.
Streaming exactly the same in Vivaldi, cpu % low, and speed stays low, around 0.8 Ghz with just a few small tops now and then when buffering, no heat.
Nearly stock browser setup in both cases. Anyone else sees w10 firefox + yt = heat ? (ps, on w 8.1, low cpu % & speed for both ff & vivaldi). Attach., typical behaviour, same yt url \ settings.
Thanks

Observing max CPU freq. on Linux with 1 tab using YT. I'm using FF 82. Only observing it on YT. Other sites play just fine.

Spent a little more time on this, (on my 10 ltsc + FF 82.0.2) cpu speed goes right up when using bluetooth output, goes way down when using speakers\headset. Tested many different YT streams.
FTM can't see anything else than there's 'something' with FF here, as Vivaldi with exact same YT stream(s), same laptop etc keeps a very low cpu speed using either bluetooth or speakers. -
Tested playing music off laptop. Old winamp > cpu maxes out on bluetooth, stays low on speakers (exactly like FF streaming).
Thought I found the universal pattern, until playing music off hd with vlc: keeps cpu speed very low bluetooth and speakers...
Attach, on bluetooth, same file.

That sounds more like a corrupt system install or corrupted FireFox install that will cause high CPU usage.

What baffles me is that Vivaldi & VLC are behaving perfect (around 0.8 Ghz cpu speed) when streaming \ playing exact same content. -

I've seen on Firefox forum where a install that was good turned out bad and was the cause of memory leakage or high CPU usage and complete uninstall and reinstall of the browser before any plugin would resolve the problem. And then install one plugin at a time to see if those weren't also the contributing problem.

Thanks for replies. It's fresh latest FF, tried both normal & esr, no add-ons. No sign of memory leaks, approx. 2.5 GB out of 8 in use. cpu utilization next to nothing, it's the speed that maxes out. Disk utilization 0 to 1%. Vivaldi zero problem.
And those players (mp3 off hd), Winamp next to no cpu utilization, max cpu speed. VLC, next to no cpu utilization, minimal cpu speed.
So, Bluetooth, Vivaldi & VLC behaves 100% normal, while FF & Winamp (at just 3 to 8 % cpu usage) refuses to throttle down the cpu speed.
My curiosity and research is about what could possibly be working in the shadows somewhere in there, who or what would need all those cpu Ghz's, without even beginning to tax cpu utilization %? Very seldom I encounter any strange things, so it's quite interesting :O) -
Usually\always, utilization and speed follow each other, so to boil it down to just one question: has anyone ever experienced conditions\causes with cpu speed maxing out while cpu utilization stays next to nothing?

^^^ on bluetooth I suppose, could you try with a 'google' browser of some brand?
My findings so far (cpu speed maxing out when using bluetooth)
Vivaldi: no
FF: yes
IE 11: yes
winamp: yes
media monkey: yes
aimp: no
vlc: no
mpc-hc: no
musicbee: no
Entertaining to do some investigation work :O)Last edited: Nov 2, 2020Vasudev likes this.
Firefox > w10 > youtube > cpu speed
