I've noticed that firefox 2 can take 70-80% of my cpu, even up to 100% on complex sites. Is this normal for a web browser or are there still some bugs to iron out?

I find it hardly uses any CPU on my computer, excet on flash-heavy sites - then it uses quite a lot, sometimes even 100%, for maybe 30 seconds while the page loads, then it settles back down

Sounds like a script error of some sort?

CPU usage for Firefox 2 is around 0% for me. It drinks a lil' memory though.

Mine can use quite a bit of memory
I find the best/easiest "fix" is to minimize it once in a while, leave it for maybe 30 seconds, then bring it back up (config.trim_on_minimize enabled)
Takes the memory usage right down to about 10Mb when minimized, then when maximized it doesn't reclaim quite as much memory as it used before, it slowly creeps up but never back to the same or highert than before

my firefox 2 crash a lot... try to have IE7 and FF2 run side-by-side with the same websites open, you'll notice on task manager that FF2 eats more resources than IE7

Memory usage in FF2 is a lot better than 1.5 incarnations, a lot of the memory leaks seemed to have been cleared up in this release. Though saying that with 2gb it never really bothered me in the first place.

I do notice FF2 does use quite a bit of CPU when loading up websites, but soon as its loaded it drops back down again. As I'm writing this my CPU is at 0.6ghz, 34% CPU load, 10% OS load. I tried IE7, but its nowhere near as quick as FF2 when loading websites, so I'm quite willing to trade off speed over CPU usage.

FF at times hogs up my memory and wont open at times. However, once it's running it well. Opera seems the best browser for me up to now.

While surfing this forum and posting, I have between 12-52% CPU usage with two tabs open. It uses the same amount of CPU power as Firefox 1.5 did as far as I can tell. I haven't noticed any slow-downs/stutters.

Average CPU usage is around 17-21%.

...what are you using for plugins on Firefox? I have a 2GHz Pentium M and I haven't seen Firefox take over 5% CPU, system CPU usage stays well under 10% with multiple tabs.

I do a lot of scrolling and usually one of my tabs is always loading a page, so that could explain my CPU usage.
I have these installed (the CPU usage did not change much after I installed them however):
    -FoxyTunes
    -Download StatusBar
    -GetVideo
    -VideoDownloader
    -IETab

Right now Firefox is using 0% CPU and 33MB of memory. However, I will note that I'm in Linux right now, and it seems to perform a lot better in Linux than it does in Windows. It's faster and it uses a lot less resources.

Strangely I think it's just this website. I reinstalled firefox 1.5 which took about 40% cpu on this site but between 0-10 on most sites, same with firefox 2 except a bit more here.

    Strange.

Could be a script related to the ad banner rotation, although, I don't have that problem here.

    My situation as well.

I was up to 150MB with some earlier FF version. In the 30-40MB range with FF2 so far.

Try uninstalling some plug-ins and put them back in one by one over time to see if you can isolate one that may be causing mayhem.

When normally browsing it uses less resources then 1.5 did but when I have 6-7 tabs open, maybe a flash/java based site etc.. it can peak all the way up to 130-150mb of ram.

I do remember leaving my old desktop pc with firefox open on a page with a scrolling ad that changed every couple ofminutes. By the time I returned, my pc was going so slowly that I checked the task manager for performance. Firefox was using 600Mb of ram!

Right now i'm browsing nbr forums on firefox 2 which is using 50-60% cpu and 71Mb ram. Nero is making an image forme and is using 3% cpu and 3Mb ram. Go figure.

I think most additional CPU usage is due to either buggy extensions or to javascript running. To get rid fo javascript related issues, check out the NoScript extension which had a default policy of not letting any javascript run but allows you to easily make exceptions (ex. allow nbr to run javascript) http://www.noscript.net/ I typically have tons of tabs open (I'm talking about 60+ tabs) and really only notice it using a lot of CPU when rendering pages or running javascript. I wonder what opening 60 tabs would do to IE7 (haven't tried it out since I'm running Linux). I once found myself with over 100 tabs open :)

FF2 takes 0 for me. But apparently there is a bug for some people that is causing 100%CPU. Not sure, you should check on the Mozilla forums, some of the nightly builds have this fixed I believe

FF2 hardly uses any CPU for me (I have a 2+ year old computer), but I did uninstall Macromedia (now Adobe) Flash Player.
With Flash Player, Firefox is hardly usable (be it FF1.5 or FF2)

If you want to selectively enable / disable flash without uninstalling it, you can use the Flashblock extension: flashblock.mozdev.org/

Ok it seems from reading the posts the people seeing some real CPU usage are the ones with old CPU's. Like Celeron M's, they are old and will have more of their resources used. Right now im using FF2 with 4 tabs, LimeWire which is playing music, I have I8kfanGUI open and im tweaking it, and my CPU usage is bouncing between 5%-8%. Its older CPU's that are having the problem, its not FF2.

My hpN5430, amd-800mhz, is running perfect with ff2, with no cpu spike

    cheers ...

Yes i have the same problem, sometimes FF2 takes 50% of my duo 2 core (=100% of one CPU) when i unload en reload firefox is going down in the most times to 0% (like normal)

Its very irritating because the 100% cpu load causes the fan to turn on, i'm just browsing not gaming! So i think its an bug, i uses IE7 until FF2 get fixed.
