I recently updated firefox to the latest 2.0.0.20 release and my laptop has been acting kinda strange since. My CPU usage would suddenly spike every few seconds, causing the fan to spin on and off.

While the browser itself runs fine, it's slowing down my other prgrams like Word and video playback etc..

Does anyone know a fix to this?

I'm using Dell Inspiron 1300 with 1.5GHz Celeron, 2GB RAM and Windows XP Home SP3.

I did, and it got worse and caused the CPU to run at 100%. :(

Have you run it in safemode?

Yes, it's the same in safemode. The CPU just keeps peaking at 80-90% frequently.

I first assumed that the addons may have something to do with it, but that's not the case. And I didn't have this problem with 2.0.0.19 and other previous versions.

    edit: Happy Xmas to all!

    Hmm...

Tried uninstalling Firefox (also delete your profile) and then installing a clean copy.

Check your CPU usage when you are browsing this website. Some of our flash based ads are taking up 25-50% of user's CPUs and the admins are not happy about it.

We sadly cannot change it, but I'd recommend you download a Flash blocker to take care of that.

Yes I believe I've found the cause! It was indeed one of the sites I frequently visit that's been dragging the whole system down with their flash based ads ( www.gateworld.net).

Thanks very much for the help guys and happy xmas to you all! :)

I'm still curious, is there a reason you aren't using Firefox 3? I'm not trying to be pushy, just curious.

Well it's just that some of the addons and plugins I've got for Firefox 2 aren't supported by Firefox 3. Plus I don't really like the new address bar functions and its bookmarks manager. The one in Firefox 2 is so much simpler and efficient IMO.

It may be more simple in that it is less feature-rich, but it is certainly not more efficient. Also, you can force extensions to work with Fx3, and 90% of the time there will be no problems. (I have only run into problems once.) Not to mention that most extensions worth installing have updated for Fx3.
