Anyone here know any workarounds with this infuriating bug that's been in firefox since version 1? The MIME addons are outdated, and I've tried editting the mimetypes.rdf file to no avail. It still amazes me that this bug is STILL here when every other browser, including chrome, doesn't have this problem.

What is exactly this bug that you are talking about? Some description of the bug's behavior would be nice.

    cheers ...

The bug is when you download a rar/avi file the check box for "do this automatically for these types of files" is grayed out, and rar/avi are not file types you can set in applications to "save file". So everytime you download any rar/avi file you have to manually choose "save" or "open" each time.

I just checked it with a rar file, and "do this ..." box is available for me to check or un-check.

So, for me it is no bug.

    cheers ...

Random idea - have you tried dragging a RAR file that's on your local disk on a Firefox window, then see if you can check the checkbox?

Yeah I have Nicels. ghn, does it still work for subsequent downloads of rar files? I believe if it's your first time you can set it but after that it doesn't work.

In Tools -> Options -> Applications, I can choose "Save File" for RAR files, is that what you want to do?

Yes it is, but there is no rar for me. However, I use 7-zip and not WinRAR, and if that's the problem that would be extremely irksome for it to be dependent on the particular program and not the file type.

What have you tried so far to try to "fix" the bug?

. Clean install of Firefox 3.5?

. Try your Firefox set up on another machine?

    cheers ...

    A few observations:

This is an annoying little bug that has left me quite frustrated. Luckily, by chance, I have found a useful work-around that involves downloading a random rar-file hosted on Mediafire.com. Don't ask why but once I initiate the download the auto-save option is prompted and ready for selection. Strangely enough this won't happen if I try the same thing on Rapidshare or many other similar sites.

So, give it a shot. Just locate and download any old rar-file hosted by Mediafire and you should be in business.

I also signed up just to thank you! I have been searching for over a month. How weird of a fix also. The developers keep saying it's all the website's fault it doesn't work. Well well, most websites didn't work, I call that a bug!

Thank you for the work around! many times!)
