that build is still going through qualification... it's likely the final build, but there is a definite possibility it will be revised before release. just a heads up.

Is this... just the release candidate? Or is it the version they'll be releasing tomorrow?

    From Heise Online today; link;

    'Mozilla issues second Firefox 4 release candidate;
    ...
Following a number of delays, last week Mozilla Senior Director of Engineering Damon Sicore said that the final version of Firefox 4 would ship on Tuesday the 22nd of March provided a second RC was not required – it is unclear whether this apparently minor update will change those plans...'

Exciting as a new browser/upgrade is I think I'll stick with 3.6.x for a little while longer, there are bound to be bugs/issues/annoyances/0days with 4 on the initial release.

So do I uninstall RC2 or just install this over?

edit: I ended up just installing over RC2 by upgrading it...don't see any changes whatsoever. One issue I've seen in 4 was that from time to time it will freeze for a few seconds. Kind of weird but hopefully they will work out all the kinks soon.

Does Firefox 4 install over Firefox 3.6 or does it install as a separate browser?

I think from RC onwards it replaces FF 3.6 but it keeps all your settings and bookmarks.

I just installed FF4 over FF3.6 and it carried over all my booksmarks and saved passwords.

EDIT: Is ClearType working in FF4? Doesn't appear to be for me.

I too just installed Firefox 4 and the fonts look horrible! I read around and it seems it has to do with the hardware acceleration. If you want "normal" fonts you need to disable hardware acceleration.

Same here, for me.. and disabling hardware acceleration made the ClearType work!!

Also, the font size of 22 (I don't know if it carried over from 3.6 or if it's the detault font size) makes certain sites and pages show up very small!!

Like NBR, CNN, just to name a couple of them... But increasing to 24 makes othe sites and pages look too big (like GMail, for example).

Anyway.. not a big deal though!

And FF4 is good.. its more snappy than before, though I wish many addons which aren't compatible yet with FF4, are updated soon  :) :)

Now I know why my eyes burn since the upgrade to FF 4.0! I thought I was going insane I couldn't read any text. I tried to change clear type, fonts, but nothing helped... until I came here to this post.

The trick is that you need to disable hardware acceleration.... how to:
Disable Hardware Acceleration in Firefox 4

I don't see big advantage having hardware acceleration turned on.
Discuss on with this "issue" please.

    ----------------------
And another thing is that DigitalPersona Exstension isn't compatible and won't be with FF 4.0 as the official support says...

I just sent a mail to the support. They told me the following:

Thank you for contacting DigitalPersona. There will be no update for Firefox 4. We apologize for this inconvenience.

    Sincerely,

    Tech Team

Downloaded and installed it, working OK so far.

I ended up having to completely uninstall my old Firefox 3.6 install, I had tweaked the interface (moved around icons and things) and when I upgraded to 4.0, I couldn't get the address bar to show up.

Probably because you have hardware acceleration enabled in Firefox 4. To disable it, go to Options ---> Advanced ---> and uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available."

I installed Firefox 4 and then uninstalled it, no problem upgrading,,however, I noticed some of the extensions from Firefox 3.6.x where not carried over and it said no support yet,,,Norton tool bar and Identity Safe was one of them.

    Cheers

I like the new "chromy" looks. I disabled the HW acceleration as I prefered the old fonts.

Now, only if they updated the del.icio.us bookmarks addon. :)

I just updated mine right now.

I only have one complaint. Scrolling with the mouse wheel doesn't deselect a middle mouse button press. I have a nontraditional way of navigating webpages, consisting of primarily middle mouse button clicks, and mouse wheel scrolls, so this was noticeable immediately.

Is where any way to change this back?

Btw, what score do you all see for FF4 with the Acid3 test? I see 97/100 (with all extensions and addons enabled) and till now, with the previous version' of firefox, it' never gone anywhere beyond 94-95/100.. Just thought I'll make a note here. Also Sunspider gives an average of 275 ms +/- 1.5% :)

For the small font size I was mentioning in my previous post, I found this addon: Default FullZoom Level. It's a really good and useful addon. Works very well.

It is probably caused by a misbehaving extension that tries to create a toolbar. You can try to see if that toolbar shows in "View > Toolbars"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes). See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins

Hey I like it, at least once I turned off hardware acceleration. The browser was sluggish with it turned on. I like the clean look ala Opera.

No issues regarding Fonts, things look fine for me. I did use the suggestions of others and completely uninstall FF3 including bookmarks and settings.

Something is definitely wrong either with your install or your computer. FF4 takes about five seconds to open for me the first time I use it that day, and only one or two seconds to open anytime after that initial opening.

Wondering if anyone has a similar issue. Whenever I open a PDF in Reader (9/X) within FF4, I have a problem with scrolling in the browser itself. The problem is that scrolling with my touchpad's two finger or side scroll scrolls in the .pdf no matter what tab I am on. Like I said, I have tried on Reader 9 and Reader X and same problem. This could be a problem with FF4 or with Reader, but just wanted to see if anyone else has this problem.

This is not Firefox 4 or any previous release or any other browser "bug". It's just the way how Acrobat reader works. It doesn't have middle mouse button programed to scroll on documents. Like the scroll wheel works on web pages...

Works fine .. no big problems.
b13 was better for some reason under linux .. got some extension incompatibility handling in final .. but updating to 4.2 when it's in ppa
as for under w7 .. 32bit works just fine no problems ..

    then w7 x64 .. already at 4.2a1pre he he

whoever using linux already should have got used for updates every day/week ..

wow, bummer Firefox 4 is giving me black screen crashes on my Toshiba X305 Q701. In fact I had FF RC installed and didn't even have to download the official release, it updated itself to 4, and now I'm getting black screen crashes. I reboot and use IE9 and no such problem.

anyone is finding the images load up slower? I can't recall if this is after I installed some plug-ins.

I also got this mini-freeze whenever i switch tabs while the current tab is loading

I just experienced a strange problem. I had three tabs' worth of another forum open and loaded (not NBR/related sites), noticed my CPU usage 25%+ constant. Task Manager confirmed firefox.exe was taking it up. Then it froze my whole computer for like 5 seconds, thought I was going to have to do a hard shut down. I closed a tab and then it was fine, however that tab was identical to another one that was open. Um . . .

Also - another poster mentioned that FF4 was not handling animated .GIFs well - I agree with this. Pages with more than a few of them really spike CPU usage. Did not happen with FF3.x.

    Making me nervous.

    Edit: FF4 just bombed.

Edit: FF4 just bombed again, this time taking my display driver with it. I was scrolling past animated .GIFs at the time.

This is upsetting. I've been using FF since 2005, this is the first time I've had consistent crashing issues. Uninstalled . . .

The hardware acceleration might be the culprit for sluggish GIF's, flash player clips. Turn it OFF and see if that helps.

I have the same issue with sluggish animated GIF's, jerky scrolling in a page with flash ads. with hardware acceleration turned ON.

Personally, I would not use any of these GPU accelerated feature in any of the browser. They are too new so bound to have lots of corner cases that the programmers haven't thought about.

GPU related problems as far as I know top the list of system instability, both in Windows and Linux.

I would wait till there are enough testers(i.e. the public) to iron out all glitches.
