One of the reasons I switched from Firefox is that the download window takes ages and I mean ages, at least 30 seconds to load! Defragging has had no effect. It could well be down to installing FF2 then uninstalling and going back to 1.5.

Any ideas? I get loads of HDD activity but as long as other apps dont need the hard drive they respond fine during.

I had similar problems with FF2 on my NB (slow downloads, slow page loads), so went back to 1.5.

FF2 (ver. 2.0.0.1) works fine on the desktop. Could be the processor (Sempron on the NB and Intel Core Duo on the desktop).

Definitely try clearing cache, cookies, history, and cleanup the downloads. This blog has a little more info:

Huh, I installed Firefox 2 on my notebook, my mom's (500mhz) computer, and my uncle's computer. And all of them run smoothly, no slow down. My mom's is a Celeron and my uncle's is a P4. Weird.

Do you use the Download Statusbar extension? I love it, but it also has a tendency to forget to clear the download list, so if I don't do it manually from time to time, I get the same problem...

You can set FF to clear the download list on exit.
