I have a new Asus G2S-B1 with the stock configuration with Spybot, Avast, and Zone Alarms added. I am having some issues with my firefox. It seems that if I try to load it too early in the startup process after logging in or sometimes if I wait and try, it seems to hang and not finish loading. I have opened the task manager and seen that it will try to load other instances but will not complete. When I end the tasks, the original stays and is locked. Is there a fix or option I can change? Thank you for your time.

It sounds like maybe you're trying to start Firefox before all of the services needed to run it are loaded.

I'm having exactly the same problems with Firefox. I'm also running Zone Alarm and wonder if it's causing it somehow.

what does this have to do with Vista? sounds more like you have an issue with your startup processes.

Actually, it has everything to do with Vista, and little to do with Firefox.

It is possible to try to start up quite a few different applications under Vista before Vista is ready for them with similar results.

yeah its just the extra startup time. i find za takes a lot longer to start up than other firewalls do among other things. wait a bit more time after booting then try and see if it opens normally. it could also be that avast is doing a startup scan (not sure i dont use it) a lot of av's especially f-secure make the system crawl for a good few minutes after initial boot up

None of the above explains why the first instance of firefox.exe can't be terminated in Task Manager after this happens. Never had that happen with an app in XP.

So, the problem only occurs under Vista and you are still seeking an explanation?

Well this is all true. Some answers to questions as I have clearer understanding.

This problem occur with or without an internet connection. It occurs after waiting 5 seconds after startup to 15 minutes. The process cannot be unloaded with other sys task managers, the only way is for a complete reboot. I have waited until ZA and Avast have protected and loaded, hence 15 minutes. I will try with both disabled and attempt this. And it is not a service issue on loading as it happens when all the same services are active/unactive. It seems to be sporatic with no justification. I have had it occur 2 boots in a row, out of the blue in the afternoon, after connecting to a wireless network, just trying to load it with no internet. I will see about trying some more scenarios

Avast! has some issues with a number of firewalls, and ZA does have a rep for slowing systems down, both XP and Vista, but works well on both.

But back to the original post, running a program before the OS is all the way up sure sounds like a problem; don't do that.

That's normal for me. I usually have to wait about a minutes before I can open up big files or start browsing ten websites at once. Small things like a text file will just open.

Question, if I uninstall ZA, that means I downgrade to ashampoo or comodo, both worse. Maybe changing the antivir would be best, but compared to avg, avast blows it out the water...dam this vista, they should have just sp xp to version 3 instead and infused vista features

I uninstalled ZA and switched to Comodo. Haven't had the problem since.

Were I to run a software firewall on Vista, it would be ZoneAlarm AV.
