When I start Firefox and type in an address, there is a lag of 4 seconds because it starts searching. The next time I type there is no lag.
How can I reduce reduce this lag?

I don't have many bookmarks, and my remember history is set to 60 days.

My system isn't very fast and well defragged.

Tools > Options > Privacy Tab > Location Bar > Set to Nothing or History/Bookmarks Only. Its default to suggest both History and Bookmarks which can be slow to load.

    1) Use readyboost/eboostr/or some sort of cache
    2) get an SSD

Well that will make the lag shorter but it's not what I want. I like the search function.

That will also make the lag shorter but I will loose the search function.

I think my history file is probably quite large and causing the lag.

I'm on Windows XP. Is that an option?

SSD: last time I checked I did not see any cheap and fast 2.5" ATA SSDs.

Try using eboostr3 program on windows XP with a flashdrive/memory card. Eboostr is very good at caching those small files so they can be access much faster. There's a trial on eboostr3's website. It works for the 1st 4 hours everytime you turn on the computer. Try it out if it works good on your computer or not.
