Driving me crazy! Memory usage from Task Manager is like 200,000K all the time! not sure what to do! Fan never stops. Performance readily touches 100% HELP PLEASE!

I like its other features too much to switch back to IE.

It shouldn't be jumping that high.

I noticed mine does that on certain pages though. Especially ones with ads that have micromedia flash. Is it just on certain pages?

no. for eg., i have my FFox open all the time 'cuz I check Yahoo mail like a 1000 times a day. so, even when it is idle when I am using some other program, the fan comes on and the Task manager shows FF as the culprit.

i had the same problem with yahoo mail also especially with the new beta version. Have you tried leaving it on another site like NBR without a tab open to yahoo?

Are you running the latest FF version? It should be 1.5.0.1
There were two memory leak bugs that were fixed in the latest update, and a bunch more in the 1.5 release.

Even if you have the latest version, memory problems have been persistent with FF. Check this page for a work around tweak that should help you out; http://informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=175800132&pgno=2

yeah my firefox uses a lot of recorces as well, just when its sitting on google it uses 84,000 memory but IE while doing the same thing uses about 1,500, but i love FF to much to let it go.
but it only uses 10% of the processor which is fine.

My average mem for firefox is about 60-70megs. I think that is about the norm for it.

My FF doesn't take up that much memory, but yes FF1.5 has been plagued by memory leaks.

I am using FF version 1.5.0.1. Seems like mem usage is pretty stable around 32Megs. With multiple tabs open and a few other apps runningm the average cpu usage is about 15%.

If you download too many extensions that may also cause you to have a couple of memory leaks. A simple way to solve the problem: close firefox and turn it back on :D.

Firefox used to regularily go up to 200 mb for me. I think the update fixed that problem though.

Just reading the forums, FF is using 63,716
    1 tab/1 window
Never noticed a drop in performance, so I am okay with it.
As much as I want to switch to IE7, I can not get it laid out the way that I am accustomed to.

    Also consider your extensions.

Firefox is great for me, around 60mb atm but thats fine, I got 2 windows each with 2 tabs opened.

Have you tried Firefox Preloader? It makes your firefox start and respond faster. Doubt it would help though.

I switched from FireFox to Opera when Opera went free. Opera is faster on regular webpages, and it does much better on the Acid2 test. Opera also uses less memory.
In my opinion, FireFox is waaaay over-hyped.

    Check out the FireFox myths:

If your having serious problems with FF1.5, download the old version 1.07 and a lot of the memory leaks caused by 1.5 will disappear.

I've tried switching over to Opera a few times, but I find there are just a few little features of Firefox that I simply cannot part with. Some of the shortcuts that I've become accustomed to are radically different in Opera while others are not available. But there is no doubt that it's faster and lighter than Firefox.

preloader is known to cause memory leaks as are many other extensions. i read on the ff forums that many extensions had to be updated b/c when they were used in conjunction w/ the newest ff they would leak memory. i will try to find the link to the thread, but it recommended updating all of your extensions as many have been fixed, but some have not. the op of the thread was arguing that the extensions, not ff caused memory leaks. after updating all of my extensions, i noticed that the leaks are less, but still there. i have also noticed that the swap file can get huge and ff does not release resources. it could be the meter i use just doesn't show the mem as released though.

Interesting comment I found out about FF1.5
    And another interesting trade-off
I personally do not have a problem with the extensions I use. It uses about 58Mb of Ram atm. Try the above suggestion
