It's annoying me to hell, i set the affinity to core 1 so that it doesn't affect the system so much but it uses all of the 50% of the CPU almost all the time, i only usually have about 10 tabs open and it never used to do this.. it's only been the past few months.

Have you installed any addons recently. This is a common symptoms in firefox if you have improperly written addon.
Anyways.... uninstall firefox then reinstall it to solve the issue therefore removing the addon. You can also switch to different browser as well. -
Try:
- installing FlashBlock Add-on
- disabling JavaScript

I, too, have been having the same problem so I'm going to do as Bog suggested to see what happens.

I had that problem as well, and I just disabled flash (I don't use it that often anyways) and it fixed the problem. However, the flashblock add-on is probably a better option if you occasionally need flash.
-
Even if flash applications are not causing the CPU usage, FlashBlock is still an amazing add-on. It basically lets you decide whether a flash app should run, which means that you can leave the majority of advertisements blocked. I have been using it myself for years.

I took up using FlashBlock a couple of years ago when I worked out that Flash could substantially reduce battery time because animated stuff keeps running whenever the web page is open, whether or not it is connected to the internet.
I assume developers like it, but I would prefer a Flash-free world.
