When I try to download a file (even the smallest jpg) by selecting Save file as... , Firefox freezes, I get a CPU spike for about 5-10 seconds (full 100% CPU utilization) and I can't use my computer in this time. After that the download starts and no problem.

Has anyone found more information or a solution to this problem?

My laptop is not the fastest, but it runs all other software fine.
    (1,6 Ghz Centrino, 1GB).

I have heard this problem from various people but I've never had this problem. Firefox did not have this problem even on my old Compaq with XP and 512 megs of RAM (and a Athlon 2000+).

Maybe you should use a download manager of some sort.

Yeah, or Opera which has a very good download manager.

But i like my Firefox so much!

Could my 4200rpm harddisk be the problem?

    Clear your download history.
If you run the download statusbar extensions, that sometimes fails to clear dl history too. Do it manually every once in a while, and you shouldn't have any problems

Well as you may have seen the solution is in the two posts right above you. I'm back at full speed now.

Also you can switch of that it remembers download history, that way the problem never occurs.
