Sometimes i have to change my firewall settings ... Windows "on" , Mcafee "off" or Vice versa to get transfer Data between network computers or get internet downloads, (Pop-up Block)
What have been your experiences / preferences?![]()

i have my mcafee one on all the time...
it has a nice little popup that asks if a program has permision to be online...it picks up alot more then the windows one...
It allows you to block other things as well...like did you know that the windows genuine advantage sends your cd key and your ip to microsoft....Windows firewall wont block that....mcafee does if you say for it to. -
I wouldn't see any reason for having the Windows Firewall on ever if you have another. It's not like spyware programs, where they catch different things. Basically McAfee's firewall is more advanced and should be able to catch everything Windows' can. It's an overlap that can cost performance.

McAfee on, windows off. Windows is just for emergencies (when no other firewalls are available). Also, no probs with LAN.
-
Although i can understand keeping both off for dowloads why whould you want both on?!
-
isnt it bad to have both on....i though awhile back my windows xp said about it being bad to have both on. maybe they hotfixed it.

Thanks for the feedback all.
OK,I turned the Windows Firewall 'Off' and McAfee back 'On'
My goal wasn't to catch more, it was to get less 'can't sign in', less Mcafee Pop-ups, less web site messages that your 'Popup blocker will not allow for your upgrade', and for some reason, one of the computers on my network will talk to the others unless I turn Both Firewalls off, blah, blah, blah. -
It's a general rule of thumb to not have two software firewalls or virus programs running at the same time, at least from what I have heard. In this case, more is NOT better.
And I would recommend McAfee over Windows firewall anyday.

i dont use either firewall.

Well, if you're only on your home network, no firewalls is ok. However, if you EVER leave the homestead, I say a firewall is absolutely necessary. That is, unless you like to clean out spyware/viruses.
If your computers won't talk to each other w/o both off, you'll need to find out which port the firewalls are blocking and open that. Or at least add a stipulation to allow the local trusted network computers access through that port. I know it can be done, if you wanted to you could make your firewall not block anything... it just wouldn't be a very effective firewall. -
I use Kerio, much better than either Windows or McAfee and it's free too.
-
Kerio PF has done wonders for me, and I also like AVG. Used AVG for about a year without any problems. Kerio seems to be doing well too, but I haveo nly had it maybe a month. -
Good config there 4W4K3, I use exactly the same, AVG and Kerio, both work really well.
I love in Kerio that you can change the setup to deny any program starting, this allows me to choose what starts and what doesn't, while a bit time consuming at the start (having to check off to allow every program to start) once you have the programs you normally run allowed to start it gets fairly good and is nice to know what new programs are trying to be started. -
dont use 2 firewalls at the same time u have to turn off one
