I have built several desktops but have never even touched a laptop. I know the installation process on a desktop is OS-Motherboard drivers-video card drivers-then go from there. I have found this nifty guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/sho...t=Vista+Installation+Guide#sec:config:drivers
but I am installing on Vista; however, I have a feeling the process is pretty much the same. Anyhow, one major question arises, do notebooks come with integrated gfx and dedicated? For example after getting drivers for my 8600GT will I have to disable on board video?

No, not unless the manufacturer specifically mentions it. Given the space constraints most systems will have only one Gfx option. Only very few laptops like the Sony SZ series offer such hybrid gfx system.
