I am looking for something to lock certain folders. I just run accross a program called folder lock. Anyone use it or have any knowledge about it. It is here http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/ . Or is there any recomendations?

What do you mean, lock? If you're running a NTFS file system w/ XP, you can secure and encrypt a folder with no additional software. Different User IDs on the same PC won't have access to encrypted folders. Search XP help for more info.

I am just looking for a program to password protect a few folders. I will look into what is in xp to see if it will work for what I need.

In Linux I used GnuPG to do that kind of stuff. Best encryption you'll probably ever find without having to fork out the money...

Of course.. You could always just rename the folder "Can't touch this".
And then edit the folder properties. Set the icon to a picture of Michael Jackson.
I assure you, nobody will touch it. -
here it is:
choose the folder you want to lock. go to "file", select "send to", and choose "compressed folder." once you compressed the folder then you can now add a password to protect your folder. To do it, open the compressed folder (i.e., by double clicking it) then select the contents you want to password protect. after selecting go to "file" then click the "add a password".
after doing this, noone will be able to open that folder unless they know the password. -
Isn't that a function of WinZip, and not XP itself?
Regardless, though it may work for kingtut, be aware that it's making a copy of the folder as a zip (compressed) file with the option to password protect the file, not password protecting the original folder. Though this may not look any different in Explorer, some apps may have trouble accessing files in the Zip file directly, and don't forget to remove the original folder.
The XP way would be to set up multiple user accounts with passwords, and then right-click the folder, choose advanced, and encrypt the folders you want to protect. You'll need to be using an NTFS file system, and I would suggest setting a screensaver password as well so no one could walk up and start using the pc under your account. -
I'm using single account and hate adding multiple accounts. But i don't want my younger sister to just open my "too private files"and so i password protect it.
This is one way of locking files (i.e., restricting someone to access the file) for those using single account. But for users who created multiple accounts, you can do what lmychajluk said.
folder lock
