I was planning on buying a new laptop and went to Bestbuy to see what they have....
I wanted a laptop with XP and not Vista, so I asked if they have any xp laptops left.
The guy there told me that if I want XP then they have to special order it and would take a little bit more time but you'll get it with XP...
The price would be the same but you only get home edition...
So for those who doesn't want Vista on their new laptop... I guess there's a way to go...

Here's a Cnet article on this topic: http://news.com.com/2100-1016-6161250.html?tag=cnetfd.mt
Also, this is another interesting Cnet article that compares XP and Vista performance-wise: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3118_7-6695272-1.html?tag=cnetfd.mt
Makes for some good reading.

When you get the XP laptop, you should also get an express upgrade to Vista, so this way, you are getting two OS for the price of one

Correct. Although, not all notebook brands have this deal with Microsoft. I think there's a list of companies that offer this here:

I'm going through a similar quandry myself, since I am thinking about a new HP lappy and the consumer line no longer offers XP.
I will probably just buy yet another OEM XP disc from NewEgg and wipe out the pre-installed Vista on whatever unit I end up with. This way, I can stay on XP with newer hardware and get rid of all the HP bloatware in one shot. It is probably the best method for me at this point (even though it will cost an extra $100). -
well if anyone gets a dell computer with a oem vista disk they dont want to use and want a xp disk lemme know
(will soon have 3 oem xp disks for dell pcs)

I bought a HP laptop for my dad this week with XP Pro through their business store. Unfortunately it was $250 more than an identically configured laptop through their home store, but it is an option, as well.

Yeah, I had checked out the business line and they were a larger chunk of change. I was interested in the DV9000 but I don't think there is a dual-drive equivalent in the business models (unless I missed it).

it's better if you have both xp and vista installed!
-
For the laptop I want to buy the manufactuer (Panasonic) says it now coems with Vista and you have to pay almost $200 extra to get a "custom" install of XP. I tell you what I will make my own "custom" install of XP.
-
Not an option for me. I don't live with my parents and I *know* if I bought my Dad a Vista laptop and reformatted it with XP and some stupid little thing went wrong, he'd blame it on something I did. I don't want that headache and the extra money wasn't an issue for my Dad, thank god.
For those who doesn't want Vista on their new laptops
