    so i reformatted and everything's working correctly except for this huge problem: i renamed, for example, my firefox desktop icon from "fire fox 3 beta 2" to just "firefox" and the icon picture has disappeared WTF

    the same with another desktop icon, when i renamed it to a pretty name the icon picture disappeared after a while what's going on ?!!

    So can you still click on the shortcut, or is everything gone? If the shortcut is still there, just try re-assigning an icon to it.

    If reassigning the icon didn't work as pixelot suggested, then delete the icon cache (C:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Local\ IconCache.db), this will force Vista to rebuild it. IconCache.db is a hiddenfile, therefore you have to enable “show hidden files and folders” option to view it (or use attrib -H IconCache.db from the command prompt)
