    I find it annoying myself. I am always using IconCache Rebuilder on our three PC's. It seems that in Windows XP it use to never get corrupted. It got worse in Windows Vista maybe lasting a month or two and now in Windows 7 it can't go a week without broken generic icons.

    Such a common bug and still even after SP1 and all the patches it is ignored.

    Most of my icon issues usually boil down to renaming or deleting the source icon.

    And you don't actually even need to reboot. Just do the following:
    1)Delete the .db file
    2)Open Task Manager
    3)End 'explorer.exe' then go to File -> New Task -> explorer.exe.

    Done.

    Sometimes you have to still just log off and log back on again after reloading explorer as if you don't not all the icons appear on the taskbar.
