Does such a thing exist? Every one of the five or so programs I've downloaded so far that pretend to be free require you to pay in order to actually recover your files.

Am I fighting a losing battle, or is there hope out there for a properly free program?

I used this program the other day. It worked perfect. Recovered files I lost a year ago. Completely free. Didn't even harasse me to donate.

I found it in the Best Free Software sticky. Check it out. Cool stuff in there.
