So i bought an HP from costco that i absolutely hate. I am planning on returning it today or tomorrow. It came with the Windows Anytime Upgrade disc that I am planning on keeping which is just as good as having the Retail disc of Vista. Just to experiment I already reformatted the HP and activated it successfully. So if I were to activate it again I could just say I reformatted again, right? So if I were to take the sticker off or write the serial number down then essentially i would have a copy of Windows Vista. Reason for this is that I want to get the Vostro 1500 but it only comes with business or XP.

I know it is unethical, but so is Microsoft.

    Could this work?

No. They are OEM disks. When they first activated it for you, Microsoft has already a list of your hardware from your HP laptop. Like a fingerprint, they would prolly have codes for each hardware that you have marked on their server. If you try to install this copy of windows on another computer, most likely they will be able to detect difference in hardware and will not allow you to use it or for the matter, activate it.

and the poor soul who gets your laptop next will not be able to activate vista because the serial number is already in use.

Yeah it's unethical...and I know Microsoft do milk their software for all they can get but i'd return the Vista disc for the sake of the person who buys the laptop next. My friend got a Dell laptop and didn't have the option of Vista Preimum only XP or Business, phoned them up and ordered it, asked about having Vista Premium even though it wasn't available on the net and they let him have it, worth calling ;).

    It's not unethical. It's theft.

if this thread were about pirated software, then it would be shutdown with many comments about how talk of it is not accepted on this forum. Is this not the same thing...Why is this thread still alive. SHUT IT DOWN.

Atleast pirated software doesnt hurt an individual...

What the OP is suggesting is going to hurt the next person who purchases that computer. Theyre going to return back to the store and argue that their unit didnt even have the sticker, while the store accuses them of taking it off.

If you really want it free...get a pirated version and deal with the hassles. Don't hurt an individual...
