I've heard the date of July 1st for being the date that new vista pcs will get free upgrades to windows 7 but am wondering if anyone knows whether this an official date or just a rumor.

Thanks a lot! look like I'll be buying a new laptop around June 26th then
-
is this only for vista-based computers, and do the computers have to be new?
-
Yeah its only for new computers.
-
I'm curious, what constitute the date? I mean, if I purchase some new laptop through the internet on June 27, do I get a free upgrade?
What about if I purchase an outlet laptop online on that date?
And what about something from best buy? -
I still recommend waiting and buying the laptop to be bundled with Windows 7, you get everything working out of the box
it's only a few months wait
-
Those few months are difference between being in summer break vs starting college.

I just got my replacement W90 today, inside was one new thing that the old unit did not have. A little shiny blue phamplet between the lcd and the keyboard of the new unit.
"Windows 7 Upgrade Program"
Here is what it says:
Looks like I cant get it :'( but hey thats good news for Win 7 lovers that wanted to hold out till Win 7 was shipping with units to save cost. Now you can buy now (well end of this month) and get for free later.
Took a quick pick on low light, may take the time for a better picture later. -
They should allow to upgrade every vista to win 7; and cancel vista if windows 7 is so much better.
-
And why would they do that, if every company replace an older product with a new one when it came out, there would be no companies in the world!!
Would Ford replace a Fiesta with a newer Focus free of charge because it was better????? -
I can think of one company that could do that and would have very few takers. Apple with its 3rd Generation shuffle. Yuck.
But yea, if you can wait, try to hold out for having windows 7 out of the box. Much less hassle. But then again, for those that re-format every few months anyways, its no biggie. -
Can anyone answer my questions...
-
Are they providing the upgrade version of windows 7? or the full version? 'cos if they provide only the upgrade version (as in the installation disc), it means that for people like me who format/reinstall the OS half yearly, we still need to fall back on installing some OS first (e.g. Vista) before 'upgrading' the OS to windows 7, right?
-
It would be the full version with the option to upgrade built into it, hope that helps
-
but i heard elsewhere that they're only giving the 'For upgrade only' disc, which means it's not the full version.

If memory serves me, and that's a big if, Vista upgrade program gave an "Upgrade" disk, not the full version disk/key. And if that was indeed the case, why would MSFT not do the exact same thing this time around? I really doubt they would provide a full version disk/key, as you never really bought a full version Vista but rather an OEM licence, but that would be very nice if they did.
-
If by online you mean through someone like Dell, HP, Sony, Asus or another major laptop seller then yes. I assume there will be information about the program posted on their websites. As far as Best buy I don't see why they wouldn't but I don't know the answer to that for sure.

What do you mean? If you mean the upgrade versions available in stores, then yes. If you mean you just bought a computer and want an upgrade, then probably not. -

I'm pretty sure that when Vista came out and you had XP, you could get Vista at a discounted price. I think he is wondering about whether or not you can do the same thing this time around.
I think that is how it was... don't quote me on it!
-
In XP, you could install from scratch with the upgrade key, as long as you verified it was an upgrade by entering a legitimate older CD and key. Is that not the case with Vista?
-
The workaround to get a clean install with a Vista Upgrade key was to clean install it first without entering a product key (gives you 30 days to activate). And then right after the clean install you would then run the Upgrade process with the key this time. It was kind of a pain but AFAIK that was the only way around it in Vista but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.
What I've always wondered about though is if one ran the clean install without a key and then simply try to activate later (within the 30 days) with the Upgrade key, would that work? My guess is No since that would be a much easier and less time consuming work-around. -
So I'm assuming PCs ordered from XoticPC don't count for this program?
-
i''m going to buy one from xotic PC as well. that is a great question

There will be an announcement on the laptop maker's website about the upgrade if they are participating in the program. I don't think individual retailers have any say in whether or not their laptops are enrolled in the program (although pretty much every company will participate). At least I think that is how it works...
Pretty much every company is part of the upgrade program though, so just keep an eye on the websites around June 26th. -
I agreed with you. I think every company should give their clients the WINDOWS 7 Installation CD for FREE.
Windows Vista is not that good if compared to Windows 7.
Moreover, I have a feeling that Windows Vista would be abandon just like Windows ME. -
Looks like BestBuy at least will not only offer PC buyers who buy on or after June 26 a free upgrade to 7, but also those who buy a standalone Windows copy too. Link
This begs the question; if someone bought the full retail version of Vista Ultimate, for example, would BB then give them the full version of 7 Ultimate? -
It will be:
Windows Vista® Home Premium -> Windows® 7 Home Premium
Windows Vista® Business -> Windows® 7 Professional
Windows Vista® Ultimate -> Windows® 7 Ultimate
but I'm pretty sure its just an upgrade disc not a standalone full version -
Vicious,
Thanks for the heads up man! I looked at the ASUS site and I didn't see any information about this. Have you or anyone else seen anything about it there?
-
Hi,
I just ordered a new laptop from Dell on june 4th but it'll be shipped around july 1st, so can I still get an upgrade for it or no?? -
My assumption would be no, but you could always call them up and threaten to cancel your order until after June 26th. Companies, of course, aren't going to be so forthcoming about the details right now. If they were to plaster info across their home page they would have virtually zero business until after June 26th.

Reposting my own topic.
I'm curious, what constitute the date? I mean, if I purchase some new laptop through the internet on June 27, do I get a free upgrade?
What about if I purchase an outlet laptop online on that date?
And what about something from best buy or other brick and mortar stores that have had these laptops lying around.
Who gives the upgrade disc? -
Any major online seller will allow free upgrades, I highly doubt an outlet will and best buy is for sure part of the upgrade program and I assume most other brick and mortar stores will be as well.
-
If you have any doubt as to the correct date or the willingness of your retailer to honor said date, just wait a week.
They may want to quibble over June 27th, but if your recipt is dated July 5th........ -
Merged the threads as they are on the same topic.

my bad.....

hey folks
is this offer only for those computers bought in the US? or Worldwide? -
Worldwide the offer (the licensing) comes through the laptop vendor but you will receive the actual WIN 7 from MS.
PC World had a article today and they said it will vary based on the vendor (HP, Dell, Acer ETC). I'm sure wherever you buy the laptop from will have the advertisement for the coupon. The coupon will come inside the box and you will have to call to activate it and Microsoft will send the DVD or make a Download availabe when it comes out. It's only for new purchases between certain dates. -
If this were available for refurbs, that'd be awesome. Oh well.
-
hmm.. not sure. Let me ask ASUSuk on twitter

I bought my Acer with Vista Premium on 6-26-09 at Staples. Tried all weekend to register for the Win7 upgrade, but their system rejected my serial number.
Called Acer tech support today and the rep said my serial number isn't in their system (for Win7 upgrade purposes). He said they would e-mail me with a resolution, but would not say when. He also said he couldn't guarantee that my laptop model would be eligible for the upgrade.
Microsoft site says that each manufacturer will decide which models qualify, so it's not a sure thing. Will return to Staples within the 14 day return period if Acer doesn't qualify my model. Has anybody been able to register for the upgrade on the Acer site? And if so, was there any charge for shipping and handling? -
I ordered a laptop and two workstations with Vista Home Premium from Dell today....does that qualify me?

On Dell's website once you build a computer it lists "Free Windows 7 Upgrade" in the specs. Go back and check your orders, if it does not say that you have a problem.
