where did you find a free version of Avast? All the "free" versions I found were 30 and 60 day trial versions, or versions that could not be updated unless you paid for them.

Avast is not free. AVG is :)

There's always confusion between the two

Thanks for the useful list of software.

    Philip, here's the direct link:
    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

You just need to register with a valid e-mail address to get a free serial number from Avast directly. You use this serial number to make the free trial version, permanently free. That's a lot of "frees" :)

Maybe rather than having multiple posts we could merge the others, have just one, this one, edited with new additions in the top post and stick it.

    PS And add links.

hasnt avast always been free? there is a 30-day "trial" - but in order to register your copy, you just input your email address - and they send you the activation key - its completely free...

Supposed to be more user-friendly than GIMP and almost as powerful, although I can't install it on my PC at the moment...

Not NEARLY as powerful as any of the 3d Studio Max alternatives (e.g. Blender), but a great tool to learn on (as I did), and fun to make quick models with. Plus, you can run the .exe without any installation and it's downright tiny - neat little program if you think you are interested in 3d modeling and want to get a feel for it.

Thanks very much for this! Your amazing! Although most of the software is pretty well known there a few things there which look quite cool and I haven't yet used. Thanks!

EDIT: Think this deserves some rep!

Perhaps someone can suggest Spyware, Firewalls, Web Design and FTP clients.

Offhand, Comodo for the first two, Kompozer and Filezilla for the latter.
