I haven't seen any official announcement about this, but I have been looking for one. Is it true that if I buy the laptop I want after July 1, then I get a free copy of Windows 7 when it is released? If so, how will I get this copy when it is released?

It will be through the manufacturer of the laptop.. So, save your receipts and each manufacturer will have their own instructions on how to do it and if they are going to offer it for free or for a price etc. Also, I belive the program is going to start June 26...

Well, the program hasnt been actually announced. So, until Microsoft/manufacturers give us a date, it would be wise to consider that you probably wont qualify if you buy today. But who knows!! June 26th is the date Microsoft is expected to announce the program and we should know then what the start date in order to qualify for the upgade will be.

Thanks a lot, that definitely helps. Didn't know when exactly they were going to announce the date, especially since microsoft is still dodging the subject of the actual release of 7.

Although no one knows for sure how individual OEMs will deal with this, this will most likely be the case, yes. You have to buy on or after June 26 to qualify.

I just bought a new laptop yesterday on June 26th and it came with a free upgrade to Windows 7. Nobody told me about it, but when I opened the box there was a brochure about it.

    AWESOME

I think the European Court action against Microsoft has caused major problems for us in Britain. I bought a laptop yesterday and had hoped that there might be some similar offer. But, as far as I can tell, all of the upgrade offers have only been made for definite outside of Europe. And Microsoft wants to charge us in £ what the rest of the world pays in $ (30% more) :(

Many American based retailers are doing the same thing with this 1-to-1 currency exchange, same thing with €

On the other side of the coin, use your £ to get a copy from USA, and you will pay 30% less than the Americans. ;)

    cheers ...
