I use Quark Xpress at work, but have only a rudimentary knowledge of/need for it. Is there any free, decent desktop publishing and/or design software for fairly simple home projects?

GIMP comes to mind, but it may be too robust for your needs. Check it out though.

I am a Quark user and doubt there are any apps out there that are free. You might be able to do a few things with Open Office. You can also use Word or Publisher if you have MS Office.

What kind of things are you trying to do?

Simple flyers and newsletters, a simple word/photo book of poetry and related photos from my writing group, that sort of thing. I don't need all of the complexities and layers of quark. I hate Word with a passion I cannot express, but did download Open Office for my productivity software. I haven't explored it thoroghly yet. I'd like at least a moderate sized typeface library and the ability to import photos and graphics. I'd sping for something reasonable, but Quark is both more than I need and way more than I can afford...

Photoshop Elements is very good stuff. It is about 80% of Photoshop. You only are losing the real high end stuff. I'd look on eBay for a cheap copy. Good Luck.
