Yup it's real. Many universities offer MSDNAA for Comp sci / electronics / electrical and computer engineering students. Luckily for me, my university offer it for other types of engineering too. I got my free copies of W7 Pro. :D

Yes, X86 softwares means 32 bit. ^^; I am sure you will find out what exactly you need when class starts. I didn't use any of those except for one note, and various versions of windows. But of course, I study somethign very different. :p

I wouldn't install Pro for the sake of it unless there is a specific function you are looking to use.

He would have told me about those now wouldn't he? :) Or maybe he would have asked whether or not there are functions he should have look out for if he really wasn't installing Pro for the sake of it.

    Here's the short version:

Collaboration software to enable multiple contributors access to the same files. I never install it on my home machines, but it's useful for large projects.

Nothing to add here. It's a server

Useful note-taking software. Basically the most useful bits of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Windows 7 Search, and MSPaint all rolled into one.

For project management. Not usually useful, it's intended for large scale resource management.

Vector graphics and diagramming. In other words, make yourself some pretty fancy charts.

It's a developer environment for programming, supports a number of languages and has debugging and refactoring capabilities.
