Looking for suggestions from your personal experience on free software that securely deletes (i.e. overwrites) files. (If I somehow missed this on the sticky thread "best software" please point it out to me thanks)

Er... if you just want to wipe files and not whole hard disks, go with Spybot Search & Destroy's File Shredder, Eraser, or something similar. Still, it is better to encrypt your drives/files in the first place if you really care about security.

I do encrypt my files, but I am just looking for something to securely delete some old text files with passwords and other information of that sort.
edit: to be clear, not looking to wipe out a HD =) -
Also it should be compatible with 32 bit vista? Eraser doesn't appear to support Vista OS
