Quick question. Say I bought a French notebook (there is one that I'm looking at due to the price and discount I can get). Would I be able to uninstall windows and use a XP home english version that I have from another computer and use the product key that the notebook comes with?

    Thanks for any help

Did the other machine have XP Home pre-installed or did you buy it seperately?

It is a store bought copy of XP Home. I want to use the product key that will come on the French system (IE the sticker on the bottom).

Then I believe (but not certain) you can do it because store bought copies give you a license to install up to 3 or 5 machines in your household.

And if that doesnt work...just call up Microsoft and give them the installation ID that comes up when yout ry to activate Windows, and tell them that this is the first computer that you are installing Windows on, and they will surely activate it for you. I've installed XP Pro on like 7 computers using this method and it works everytime.

My source tells me that I am wrong but I can confirm that I did something similar to what AbN610 has done with Office XP.

You may also be able to avoid re-activating windows (which can be a real pain in the ass), if you first copy the wpa.dbl file in C:/Windows/System32 onto a usb stick or something, then after you reinstall, copy it back.

I don't think thats correct. A store bought copy will allow you to transfer your copy of windows from 1 pc to another, providing you delete the copy off the other pc first.

However, a copy recieved with your computer can ONLY be used on that computer, and can not be transfered between dicfferent computers.
