I am running Vista SP2 32-bit and frequently get BSODs and kernel page errors. At times the system is unresponsive once logged in. In most cases the system returns to normal behaviour once I run chkdsk /r at startup whereupon it finds and fixes several corrupt index entries. This has become a regular event now. This might have been considered to be a Hardware issue but Ubuntu on the same system doesn't behave in this way and report anything like this. Does anyone have any idea what might be behind this?

You might check what Event Viewer has to say about the errors in Administrative Tools.
-
How to search for specific errors in the Event Viewer? Any easy way other than sifting through the entire list?
-
Just look for red icons.

"Vista SP2 32-bit and frequently get BSODs and kernel page errors"
hey, i thought they were features. actually, on my previous vista 64-bit i had very few errors, is was just soooooo slooooow.
but, yes, event viewer, they will be sorted by date, click on level and look for red, something common, esp newly added programs. but sometimes the error message can only be understood by someone from the planet zorg.
good time for a change to windows 7? (clean install of course)
also could be hardware, failing disk, loose ram chip... -
If you are constantly finding corrupted sectors with checkdisk - you may want to check your HDD is OK...
Try CrystalDiskInfo to read the smart data.... -
Different HDD status programs report differently. Is a temperature of 40 C normal?
