So my Vostro 1500 should be here this afternoon or tomorrow and I've been thinking about how store bought computers come with that awful pre-installed software (I'm a home builder guy). I removed most of it during the confguration process like Acrobat Reader (it sucks use FoxIt) and Microsoft Works, but in the order sheet it seems I've missed somethings like some of Dell's own software. Now, I haven't tried Dell's stuff but I just like fresh clean installs. So I have a few questions about it:

    1) I own Windows XP Pro for my desktop. Could I install Pro and use the key that came with the laptop?

    2) I'm almost positive the answer to the last is no, so could I install Home from a fresh source and use that key?

    3) Is the OEM Home disk supplied or is it a recovery utility/media?

    1) No, you cannot legally use one license on two computers.
    2) You can use the key on the bottom of the laptop, or call Dell and ask for the CDs. I prefer the asking Dell method.
    3) It is a recovery partition, and it comes loaded with all the bloat as well. Dell's CD will just be the OS, without bloat.

I thought Vostro's were bloatware free? Any way whats wrong with just uninstalling the unwanted software? Works for me and I own multiple Dells next to my home build machines.

If you have a retail OS you're not limited to one computer. Only the OEM disc is limited to one computer. But then again you can activate until it says you've maximized the activation limit.

Oh no I own two copies of Windows XP Pro one of which I haven't used yet. I did my share of illegal Windows owning but I figure that they've earned my money and I'd like the convenience of actually owning it. I'm still assuming they key that comes with the lappy isn't going to work for Pro seeing how the Home edition is what came with the laptop so then it would be activating the other key which I don't want to resort to...But about asking Dell for the CD's,:

Is there a charge for it? Would it be illegal to just download and .ISO of it instead seeing how I actually own the license? How do I go about asking Dell? Is there a form or do I email them and who do I send it to? I apologize for so many questions but I'm really really anally picky about how my computer is configured. I like going through the setup process and making sure all the unecessary stuff is turned off as well as other optimizations, etc. Thank you for your supplies so far.
