Did quite a bit of searching on this, and could not find the solution. Would love you for alleviating this problem if you can share.

Did a Fresh Windows XP Pro (no SP2) reinstall on an X61s
A guide mentioned," install Intel Chipset Support before anything else. "
    Downloaded from here. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67818
And also tried the link mentioned in the guide (directly from Intel).

Now I keep getting this error message

This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I'd like to start using this laptop, please lend a helping hand. Is the Intel Chipset Utility an absolute must?

The chipset installer will not be able to run until you install service pack 2. It uses a newer version of the .msi package service which is incompatible with the older versions. I would recommend installing both.

It'd be a huge mistake to forgo SP2. In addition to provide essential security features, it's only to give you more software compatibility.

I don't know everything about drivers and windows sp2, but I thought that the Intel Chipset Utility "properly aligns" how Windows sets up its drivers for the motherboard of my computer. Therefore doing a Windows SP2 install before doing the installation for Intel Chipset 2 would only be asking for trouble, since it's like doing an upgrade on top of an unstable communication link between the Intel Chipset and Windows.

I will install just the wireless drivers, than run SP2, and then run Intel Chipset Utility, and the other drivers in that order and report how it goes.

Thanks for the help ! :)
    Sincerely,

    cyu

Actually, if you can use ethernet instead of wireless, use ethernet so that no drivers are installed out of order. The reason you're having trouble is because your computer was released AFTER SP2, so the manufacturer assumes you're going to have SP2.

SP2 isn't a driver, though. It's a significant upgrade to the way Windows operates.
