    Hello folks

Now that SP1 is out... I'm thinking of fresh installing my lappy with Vista Ultimate (32-bit).

Just wondering, after I fresh install the basic OS, what next?

    Do I:
    A) install all drivers first, then install all WU updates, then finally SP1?
    B) install SP1 standalone first, then all drivers, then all WU updates?
    C) otherwise?

    Please advise... cheers :)

    1. Standalone.
    2. Drivers.
    3. Then run Windows Update afterwords if there are any other updates necessary for your system.

    :)

You should install the OS+SP1 first, then the drivers, then the updates.

I usually install OS first and then driver updates and then I would go to windows update afterwards and install SP1 and any other extra driver updates that your system needs.

    Thanks mate.

The only worry I have when installing OS + SP1 first is that the standalone installer is very big (400+mb)... so I am worried there'll be a lot of 'junk' left behind ^^ will it?

Nope. It only installs what is needed, kind of like a patch for a game. It's just very large because it supports many languages and has some updates in case that aren't already installed on your system. Just to be convenient that is. ;)

I plan on doing the same this weekend!

    1. Vista Home Premium
    2. SP1 Standalone
    3. Drivers
    4. Windows Update (there shouldn't be anything really)

The ONLY issue I have with SP1....my University makes us connect to the internet through Cisco Clean Access Agent. Apparently it isn't ready for SP1. After installing SP1 last night, Clean Access puts me in Quarantined Mode for a certain amount of time before it completely disconnects me. It tells me that I don't have the latest Updates from Microsoft (yeah, really). I just have to log back in once the time runs out. This also stops me from getting on the University webpage, checking my school email and Blackboard. :( Hopefully they will release a patch soon.

Wow, its good to see that there are a lot of other people that install OSes like I do and in the order I do. I didnt think there were many out there that did. Not saying its 100% correct but it has always made the most since to me to do it in this order.

Yeah hopefully. I use Blackboard as well as my school's log-in website service which I'm sure isn't compatible with SP1 yet.

But thank god my Eee PC isn't too much of a handle. ;)

hey guys, just a concern... it seems like some people experienced failed SP1 update because of drivers issue. So I wonder...

    1. Fresh install OS
    2. Install SP1 standalone
    3. Install drivers

Will the above sequence fail because the drivers are not yet updated before installing SP1?

This is how I upgraded Vista SP1.

    1. Installed Ultimate then all drivers.

    2. Upgraded to SP1.

Drivers and all are working fine.

Microsoft strongly recommends installation of SP1 through windowsupdate.microsoft.com because of driver issues.

Yup that's the order. Although if you can, getting the MSDN Vista SP1 RTM (full OS DVD) from the net is the best solution imo. Service Packs usually have less problems when integrated in the installation DVD + you save an hour.

Ok folks, I finally did a fresh install with SP1 without using the standalone installer, and with minimal 'extras' from WU.

    1) Fresh install
    2) Install latest drivers
    3) Run WU (it'll show tons of updates)
    4) Make sure you first install the three (or two, for non-Ultimate/Enterprise) critical updates KB 935509 (for Ultimate/Enterprise only), 938371 and 937287. If they don't appear, download from Download Centre.
    5) Hide all other updates
    6) Check for new updates
    7) It'll show up 'new' updates (which are actually older ones because the latest ones are hidden)
    8) Restore the updates that are similar to the 'new' updates (e.g. daylight saving) - these are essentials to be installed before SP1, apparently
    9) Install those restored updates (make sure not to install the 'new' ones because they are older than those restored)
    10) After these are installed, check again for new updates and viola! SP1 shows up!

Hope this helps, especially for those whose SP1 refuses to show up. This link is very useful to find out as well if you have conflicting devices.

I think the problem with CISCO and SP1 is not in SP1 but SP1 does something to the firewall and hence it doesnt connect.
I tried a lot of stuff, and eventually, I used PCtools free firewall and its working.
All others including, vista's own dont work.
    Hope that solves your problem.
