    And he wants to upgrade his computer to Vista Ultimate 64 Bit from a 32 bit install of Home Premium. Can he do this without a reformat and just "upgrade" the current install?

    Not possible to upgrade from 32 to 64 bit.

    Your friends has to do a fresh install.
