I just bought a dv7 HP Pavilion with Vista. I don't like Vista and I have a few problems with it. So, I would like to install XP instead.

I still have my old dv6000 recovery disks with XP. Is it possible to use them to install XP on my new laptop? What is the procedure?

    Thanks.

most probably it won't be possible - first, the recovery discs will contain some dv6000 specific stuff, use some usual installation disc.

and second, licensing. if the previous xp windows were pre-installed on your dv6000, you cannot use the os on another computer. but in case that your vista is ultimate or business edition, you can downgrade to xp within your current license.

I could get some regular XP disks but I am not sure if I could get all the necessary drivers for all the toys: I have Blu-ray and Bluetooth among other things on my new laptop...

Unfortunately, it's neither ultimate nor business edition.

    A few questions:
What would happen to the warranty in this case?
Is the process reversible with the Vista recovery disks?
Would stuff like QuickPlay still work?
    What is a chipset driver?

Im sure it is possible.. Its really rare that installing XP isnt possible because of driver issues.. Theres almost always a method..

What are your problems with Vista, exactly? It may be more productive to address and resolve those than to try and run a decrepit and obsolescent OS on your new computer.

As Relativity17 said, it may be easier to try and fix whatever "problems" you're having with Vista rather than installing XP.

No, it is not possible to use recovery disks from one computer on another. Recovery disks restore a specific computer back to its factory settings. It cannot be used on another computer.

If you want to install XP on your laptop, you will need a genuine copy and license of XP.

What applications are they, and at what stage do they fail? Are you notified that the setup is incompatible with your operating system, or is it just a silent failure?

Good lucks. If you encouter some error messages, visit the apps websites themselves, many times they offer patches and hints.

    cheers ...

I found that the Program Compatibility Wizard would allow me to run a program already installed, but does not help me install them.

    Are you suggesting something different?

It is the same principle, if you (right) click on the setup file and run it using the Program Compatibility.

    cheers ...

One of them is ROXIO's Easy CD & DVD Creator 6. Another is a Karaoke software. I could try to run them with the compatibility Wizard, but it won't allow me.

The funniest thing happened: for all those programs that failed to install, the setup files were just deleted from the computer without my intervention!!!

When I right-click on the setup files, there is no choice for Program Compatibility.

You tried right-click, properties, then compatibility tab .. correct?

    cheers ...

No I did not at first.

But now, after installing ROXIO's Easy CD & DVD Creator 6, even with the XP compatibility mode on, it still doesn't work.

Roxio 6 was not programed to be Vista compatible, so no matter what you do, it will not run.
