why do I have to become a software engineer in order to use vista? I just want to use my pc, if there's a problem I want it to tell me what I need to do to fix it (or better still, a button saying "fix all problems") - I don't want to waste hours of my time googling various drivers or error codes in order to work out a solution - this is a Hewlett Packard Pavilion, not some obscure weird thing put together by idiots, this is a mainstream PC. this is why people pay for a Mac. I looked at 'problem reports and solutions' for months, but there was nothing, so I assumed all was well, yet when I checked 'performance information and tools', 'advanced tools' it said I had a number of problems with drivers inhibiting resume from standby and startup for the past year! GEARAspiWDM.sys was one , NETw5v32.sys was another
    - so I clicked on the link for each of them. 'View details in the event log' was an option - so I clicked that, to be told 'This driver responded slower than expected to the resume request while servicing this device' and another one, equally helpful said: 'This application caused a delay during standby' and a BIG exclamation icon saying 'Error: 'Windows has started up:
    Boot Duration : 97759ms
    IsDegradation : false
Incident Time (UTC) : 07/04/2009 20:44:34' - yeah great, that tells me a lot. what do I do now? oh - "Event Log online Help" is the link highlighted, brilliant. And what does that do when I click on it? f*** all, it says - send the following details to microsoft, ok? click yes - then nothing happens. nothing.

Reliability and performance monitor seems to be a good place to get some help from, but no, even that won't work - "Internet Explorer cannot download, the system cannot find the file specified" is the error message I get there. "Generate a system health report" is the suggestion offered by 'Advanced Tools' - great, that sounds helpful - but then I get another error message saying "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." Oh brilliant, more work to do - no link to the 'set associations control panel', I'm just supposed to find it myself - but of course that folder doesn't exist in the control panel itself! a search from the start menu also finds nothing. So I look through the 'Event Viewer' for any errors - here's one - "Unable to locate the open procedure "OpenIPSecPerformanceData" in DLL "C:\Windows\System32\ipsecsvc.dll" for the "PolicyAgent" service. Performance data for this service will not be available. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the error code." yeah, that's really helpful. and another one - "The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." (7 times today) this means nothing to me, as I'm not an engineer. So again, I try the 'event log online help' link - oh joy, this is what I get: NOTHING happens.

oh, and here's another classic - "A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service." meaning what exactly??
and this is a very regular one - "Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number." it might as well be swahili, it means NOTHING to me. I give up.

    uhm, feel better?

I get the frustration but had a hard time weeding through it.

GEARAspiWDM.sys is third party system driver used for burning CDs (I think that is its purpose) most commonly found in itunes

NETw5v32.sys is your intel wireless adapter.

You can update your wireless adapter with the latest drivers and they may provide some joy.

Itunes is a different beast. Did you install it for an ipod or get it by accident with quicktime?

On numerous systems, I find that uninstalling itunes dramatically improves system boot up...but them people cannot use their ipod. You may temporarily uninstall it to see if it makes a difference.

iTunes for Windows is a pile of awful code that works slow even on cutting-edge machines.

getsongbird.com with the iPod add-on, or other alternatives for handling iPods.

I am sorry you have such problems wit Vista.

However, the way you wrote your post is - from a reader's point of view - very humerous. It made me chuckle and laugh - maybe you should write a book about it? If you get more of these reports, maybe from other people too.

I gave you some rep for that.

PS: it is also very commendable of you to give details of your problems

PPS: Macs only work because they run 10 odd pieces of hardware.
(Disclaimer: I very strongly dislike Macs and the above statement is more subjective than objective)

Sorry for the rant - thanks for your suggestions, I got rid of GEARAspiWDM.sys, inc registry entries (from a tip on another forum), itunes starts but says it can't rip/burn discs. it still plays fine, and I do really like that coverflow interface on itunes though, and nothing else seems to do that.

Ape - Bubba - You've got too much time on your hands ... :) I suggest you get a copy of WIN 7 Beta and install it as a dual-boot on your Pavilion. By the way - this is being typed in WIN 7 on an H-P Pavilion - you can't beat a free OS!!
