I guess this is more of a Web ware but is there a Firefox extension/GMail hack that allows GMail to have a much-needed reading pane?

You can download all your gmail in a variety of email programs that would give you a reading pane. Outlook in my case downloads all my Gmail when I open it.

Yes but 1) I do not have Outlook on every computer I use and 2) Outlook is overkill for GMail IMO; I like GMail for simplicity.

Thunderbird is a great free email client that's light on resources and has a good amount of features.

As of right now, there is no reading pane in Gmail, but it's a feature they may add. Here is something in Google Labs that is similar to what you're looking for: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/02/05/gmail-adds-support-for-multiple-pane-viewing/

I'm pretty sure I've seen a script for this already... let me see if I can dig it up.

    EDIT: see this: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/11/preview-gmail-conversations.html
