well garage band is a synthesizer i think. what it has is preprogramed audio clips that you can select and turn it in a song basicly. you can ad drums, strings, anything and you can make a beat out of it.
i think that explains it pretty good.

FL Studio is amazing, but it's not free (though it's easily attainable by... other methods... )

That's about the only good windows program like that that I know of.

FL Studios is ... failry weak.

Check out Reason and Ableton Live.
Reason is good, and is compatable with Rewire apps. The only problem is it doesn't support plugins.

Ableton Live, I'm not very used to yet, but it's pretty crazy. I've heard some great stuff from it.

As far as free... good luck. There are a few VST's out there... but most are not free, and those that Ive heard of that are free are usually either very limited or pretty crappy.

BTW, GarageBand is more of software studio, not a straight synthesizer. While it can use plugins, it's mainly used for arrangements.

If you want to try some CRAZY synth sounds, check out Absynth. It's a real killer on the processor, but makes some sick sounds.

None of those are (legally) free though; I really don't think there are any windows programs like that for free.

Ahhh yes, i used to mess around with fruity tracks and reason a bit. I remember looking for a long time for a free alternative before giving into other sources.
