My friend asked me to help him get his sound to work on his laptop.
When I got it there was a sound driver installed in device manager but in control panel he still couldn't access any volume options and couldn't hear any sounds. I uninstalled it and downloaded the one on the gateway website for that model.
It warns me that the driver is not signed, and if I ignore the warning it will almost finish installing then blue screen.
Well, since the driver I downloaded was the Realtek ac97 drivers, I decided to try downloading them from the realtek website, and the same thing happens.
Some people online have said they got sucess with the soundmax c major driver, but it also ended with a blue screen.
He said before he lost his driver (had to reinstall O.S. from a virus) it was working, so I don't think the hardware is damaged.
    Any other ideas?

Does he have a driver CD that may have come with the Gateway? If yes try that it may have an older working version.
