If you change ICOs your self (As I do), then you only need to download the first link, which is a Blank ICO.
Otherwise do the reg patch too. (I can't vouch for the reg-path since I haven't tried it)
For Vista just download the "Vista Shortcut Overlay Remover" on that page. Choose between 32 & 64 bit version.
You don't need the Blank ICO or Reg edit.
Now you ICONS can look NICE.![]()

I believe this is a setting buried within XP and Vista which is enabled by default. You can turn it off using TweakXP, and I'm sure there are ways to find it without a utility as well.
I do know that when I created my latest slipstreamed XP install, and went through the new settings in nLite, that was one of them.
Good find tho! -
Download TweakUI from Microsoft. There's one version for XP. If they've released the one for Vista, it will be available separately.
Great program, free, and gives you control over a number of things, including the annoying shortcut arrow. -
I couldn't quite remember the name, though. It is a very nice arrangement of Windows settings to play around with. I'm all but sure they've released a Vista version at this point.
Get Rid Of "Shorcut Arrow Overlay" on XP & Vista Icons.
