    Hi

My laptop died for some reason. I have a SATA to USB connector for the hard drive. When I try to access my folder with all the data on it, there is an error dialog telling me that I have no access.

Should I try to boot from the hard drive from my laptop or is there another way to solve this? The reason I'm hesitant to boot from hard drive is that since the hardware is different there might be errors/damage to the HDD.

    Thanks!

Get an external SSd enclosure(really cheap) and try it that way.

A simple SATA to USB cable should work the same way as the OP has one.

My guess is that you might need to change your user permissions - grab access to all files.

You don't have any encryption on it? Because then you might be out of luck.

If you do stick the SSD into another basic computer (as little hardware as possible) the only change should be a request to activate windows - it should have some basic drivers for core functionality and you should be able to move the files off the SSD.

Right click on folder - properties - security tab

(And that's as far as I can go for an English OS; mine's in German)
