I just posted a link to this app in another topic, but it warrants its own. This is a freebie that I recommend. What else do you use to get rid of unwanted garbage on your machine?

    Ad Aware:

With its ability to scan your RAM, Registry, hard drives, and external storage devices for known data mining, advertising, and tracking components, Ad-aware can easily rid your system of these tracking components, allowing you to maintain a higher degree of privacy while you surf the Web.
The redesigned user interface improvements include more flexibility and control. This includes user-defined file sizes, which speeds up the scanning process by excluding files that it recognizes as clean. Other advanced features include automatic quarantine and Recycle Bin storage of removed components, an all-new viewer for backup archives that allows you to quickly and easily review components that have been removed and stored for future restoration, and an integrated reference file updater that can automatically search for new reference files when Ad-aware is started. The latest version includes improved Browser Hijacker detection, HOSTS file scanning, smart scan mode which improves speed and has been optimized to detect content at the root, and much more. Be aware that some ad-supported programs, such as GoZilla Free, will no longer function if you remove their ad modules.

    Brian,

This may sound as like an ignorant question, but is that the same as anti pop-up software?[?]

If not, do you which anti pop-up program would you recommend? There are so many of them out there.

    Thanks

    Alan

I use NoAds popup blocker. It's freeware and updatable, so if the list of popups that's included isn't enough, every time a popup pops up, you can add it to the list quite easily. Also (important to me) it's a tiny program that eats very little memory.

No, this is not the same, this app removes spyware on your machine. As for pop-offs, I use the free one with teh Google toolbar. Excellent app.

    Brian,

Thanks for your advice. I downloaded Ad-aware to find that it immediately picked up 15 spyware/data mining files which were deleted and 15 that were quarantined (I deleted them also). Scary as I have only owned this computer for 3 days...

BTW, I downloaded the google toolbar and the pop-up blocker is enabled (so far it says 0 blocked, and when I click on it, it says enable pop-ups, click on it again, back to # blocked). Is that all I have to do to have it running while I'm surfing?

    Thanks

    Alan

p.s. I bought a Fujitsu C2240 over the weekend. So far so good, really happy with it.

See, those ads are nasty guys. With the Google ad blocker when it shows the number, that means it's active. Go to cnn or something, you'll see ads being blocked.

I have downloaded Spybot and Ad-aware. Now everytime I try to run Kazaa Media Desktop it gives me an error, saying that Kazaa has detected an error in the advertising software, possibly caused by Ad-aware. I have tried uninstalling ad-aware and spybot, but no changes were visible. Any help please??

    Hey quesoyyo,

I think by using spybot or ad-aware you have removed something Kazaa needs to run, usually they mention some sort of adware that has to be installed inorder for them to run. I would uninstall Kazaa and reinstall it.

I would recommend not running regular Kazza do to all the spyware and such it puts on your computer I would instead recommend Kazza Lite (K++) as it offers all teh same functionality with no spyware.

That's what I just did. Works fine now, thanks. So what exactly is the difference between Kazaa Lite and Kazaa Media Desktop? Just the Ads?

not just the ads, but thats the main thing. Kazaa lite seems to run faster and use less resources. Along with a few nice extra features.
