Well, I am getting my laptop in a couple of days, and I was wondering what were some very important programs that could increase the performance and extend the performance of my new laptop? After installing all the cds that come in the box and the nvidia driver that you will have to do, what other thigns are there?

I suggest you first make sure you can back everything up to an external HDD. Then do back ups in increments of a fresh install, after security programs such as a firewall, AV, antispyware etc then add programs

Check out the free software page pinned to the top of this forum. LOTS of good stuff there.

While you buy the new lappy, get a USB stick to be your “emergency” stick. Load it with programs you can’t live without, i.e. MS activation scripts et al.

On my stick I have all sorts from iso tools to pdf readers to old versions of browsers and programs, boot tools, codec’s etc. Also grab MS updates specifically service packs so you don’t have to run updates constantly.
Don’t forget your bookmarks, profile settings and various scripts you create for your fav browser, stick them on a stick too.

Generally, when you just installed Windows, your computer is at optimal performance. I generally recommand to defrag the hard drive occasionally and don't install/remove lot of applications to keep the computer clean. Also, watch the programs that loads on startup and disable the one you don't need. Turn off services that you don't need (check on google to know which ones are safe to disable).

If you don't put crap on your computer, there's no need to install softwares to optimize performance. Maybe you want to have a registry cleaner or some application suite for optimization but I don't feel the need to do that. Just defrag and keep the computer clean.
