Alright, so with XP being like 8 years old, (and working with it for 8 years) I want something different...
I really would like to upgrade to Vista, from XP. I would like to use Windows Aero. But, I have no real need for vista, at all.
I am afraid that it will run slower then WinXP.. Is this a valid concern?
Or should i just wait, and in a few months go for win 7?
I might do that, but how will that run over Win Vista? Could i use Aero?
Or just say forget it, and when i buy a different laptop in the next year or so, just get Win 7 then..
D520, T5600 1.83 C2D, 2.5GB Ram. Integrated video up to 224MB.
I know Vista already because the Hpdv6704 has it. Dont know Win 7 tho..
Thanks

well if you have to buy a new one, get win7. if you have some license for vista, and downgraded, then get vista.
i drop xp everywhere i can see it. and nobody that switches to vista or win7 misses it for more than 3 days. -
Which ever is the cheaper option, I would go with that one. Both will do.

Probably your most cost effective option is to just keep what you have now and when you get a new Laptop use whatever OS is on it at the time. if you really want to upgrade then go Win 7. I see no reason to specifically seek Vista out at this point. Vista works well, but is not what I would call very "snappy". Win 7 is good in this regards and its system requirements rival those of Win XP.

Why Vista?

If you need to buy the new OS, go with Win7 rather than Vista - unless you want to get Vista cheaply - I suppose you may find places that try to dump some stock...
I still use Vista on my SSD - and the core components in Vista vs. Win7 are pretty similar - still, Win7 is optimized compared to Vista.
Speed - your laptop may boot slower, however hardware will be used more effectively.
The desktop won't be drawn by the CPU, but by the GPU and the desktop is not drawn while you run a fullscreen application like a game. -
Isn't 7 out yet? I already have had it installed on 2 of my computers...

If you want Vista or 7 on the D520, you should upgrade the ram to at least 2GB (unless you already have?? Which is right, your post or your sig?).

Id aim for W7, but Vista will run on those specs as long as its a clean install.
-
It all depends on how much it is worth IMO.

If all you want it Windows Aero, I suggest finding some custom themes for XP, some I found were very W7-y
-
I suggest an antifungal cream for that itch.....
Seriously, if you upgrade to Vista, you're likely to be disappointed with the drop in performance. Compared to XP, Vista will 'feel' slower on identical harware. This has been my longstanding experience with pretty much every Windows operating system since I upgraded Win 95 to 98. Win 7 seems to be the first OS that feels snappier on the same hardware (Vista to 7). -
@OP: I agree with firstwardo, just put some custom themes on XP if that's all you're after. The truth is, Vista will probably seem a bit slower than XP did on that system, unless you do any real intensive tasking, where Vista has much better resource management.
I personally would go with 7 if you were making a switch, but it's probably not worth buying the whole OS just for what you want. -
Get win7. trust me!

Every once in a while I have an itch to look an certain high school girlfriend, but she's a lot older now. Probably not as much fun.
-
Haha your guys are right.
Vista is nice, but i dont want to run slower then Xp, so maybe some time in the future i will upgrade to Win 7.. But then with these new computers so cheap.......... why upgrade to win 7 on this dell, might as well get a new computer and has the OS come with it...
As of now, that itch is GONE. XP it is. -

And one other thing to consider that nobody has mentioned: The learning curve from XP to Vista is pretty steep, so, rather than having to learn all the ins and outs of Vista, and THEN having to learn Windows 7, I would rather go directly from XP to Windows 7 and not have to go through all of that. Also, I've heard that some of the nifty features of Vista have been removed from Windows 7 --- so that's another reason for going straight to 7 --- you won't miss what you've never had!

Vista/7 also provide better security over XP, as I was reminded here.
