    Hi,

My friend's computer has broken and he's getting a new one (against my advice but oh well).

He wants me to get the data off his drive so I've plugged it into my computer (via USB-SATA convertor) but when I try and copy his documents folder, it says that access is denied and I can't get to it.

How can I get round this?

    Many thanks,

    Matt. Ireland

Have you tried accessing it as an administrator?

You might have to take Ownership of his/her files....

Try taking ownership of the folder/sub folders/files that you want to copy by right clicking on the folder, click on sharing and security and then click the "Security" tab and then "Advanced" and add your user account as the "Owner" of the folder(s) etc. and select the option to replace ownership on all sub folders and files. I never experienced this task that you're trying to accomplish but that's what I would check.

Edit: Andy beat me to it above!

Andy beat me. You do not have permission to access these files and you will have to take ownership.

Alternatively, you could make a User that has the same Name/Password, it's a trick that has worked for me with Networking.

Yea I guess that could work in this case as well. By creating the same username/password that your friend used on his computer on your computer and adding that username to the Security list and applying the full control permission. [+1 to kegobeer again for introducing me to that neat trick.]

Thanks very much! That all does really help.

That username/password trick seems to work very nicely - thanks!

I wish friends wouldn't ask me to fix their computers like this..... I just end up asking you guys a lot of the time lol.

    Thanks again (rep for all),

Have you considered simply moving the whole drive into the new computer?

Did that with a friend's PC. Saved him the cost of a HDD and of a new OS ;D
