I want to rid myself of the yellow update shield which sits....constantly!...in my system tray. It's telling me to install the downloaded SP3 for MSOffice.

Somewhere along the line, my Office key code got buggered and apparently the SP3 can't be installed as it fails every time. Nonetheless, the blasted thing keeps trying......annoying the devil out of me and grabbing resources.

I was able to find it on my laptop in another issue, but how do I navigate to it to kill it off on this desktop running XP?

If you do not need Automatic Updates and can update manually through Microsoft Update, just disable Automatic Updates, in the System Properties....and then uncheck the service of Security Center from msconfig..!!

I did go to the Security center and turned off Automatic Updates. Now I have a RED shield in the system tray.

I also clicked on the yellow shield first, unchecked the install for SP3. None of this seems to do the trick.

I'm sorry to say that I wish Microsoft would stop trying to be my mother all the time.

Goto Run > msconfig > Services tab > Scroll for Security Center and uncheck it, then restart....

Go into Security Center and disable the way it alerts you.

Right-click the taskbar > Properties > Notification Area tab > Icons: Customize

Find the icon in the list and set the Behavior to Hide.
