    Hi...

I am having this recurring problem with my emails. I use Gmail as my primary email account. I have over 2000 mails - a lot of them with attachments. They are all labelled, which are colour coded. I should also add that I like Gmail's interface probably because I am so used to it. Naturally, the problem is that Gmail is not available when I am moving around or where internet is absent. Since I am in India at the moment, this is a problem and connecting with my mobile phone, while certainly an option, is not always feasible.

I explored the possibility of using Outlook 2007 in conjunction with Gmail. But the problems with this arrangement are well know to you folks. For starters, I like the 'threaded' system that Gmail uses and to replicate that on Outlook is a real pain in addition to the fact that it ends up being a mere approximation. Of course, Outlook has an excellent Calendar function, which I would like to use. And, of course, there is the question of syncing with my Symbian (S60) phone.

Given all of this, I have been seriously considering using Google Gears, which will give me Gmail offline capability. Perhaps also the opportunity to work with Google's Calendar.

Given the above, my question(s) is as follows:

    (1) In your considered opinion, should I go ahead and download Gears and then enable Gmail offline? I am asking this for two reasons: (1) I believe Gears is being relegated to the background and that Google is working on HTML 5.0 which is slated to be operational sometime around 2012. (2) Is Gears resource intensive and will it muck up the innards of my machine(R400 with Win 7; 500GB HDD and 4GB RAM)?

    (2) Are there any other alternatives to Gears? What I want is the ability to do my email work offline (when required) and for this the threaded functionality is important.

    (3) If I do go ahead and enable the Gmail offline function are there any issues that I should be aware of?

    (4) Is there any other matter I should be wary of if I do opt for Gmail offline?

    (5) If any of you have used or are using Gmail offline, can you please share your experience with me?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

    Cheers!

Yeah...that is what I was alluding to when I say pairing Gmail with Outlook 2007, but then there is the problem of Outlook not being able to replicate the threaded functionality of Gmail.

Nothing wrong with gears. I have been using it for many years.

OK. Cool. Can you tell me where exactly does Gears store the downloaded mails of Gmail on the local machine? It would be good to know to monitor the same.

I'm afraid I don't understand. I thought Gmail was already 'in the cloud' - so to speak!!! But thanks nevertheless!
