I'm having the most difficult (and confusing time) trying to figure out how to get the process correct.

I put the disc in while in XP and got the message "This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. [...] To install a new copy of Windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select Custom (advanced)."

So, I went into my BIOS and change the boot order so that the CD-ROM would be first. Put the 64-bit W7 disc in and restarted. It starts with the boot from CD message. Asks for me to push any button. I do and nothing happens it just continues to load up XP.

Is there something I'm missing? Everything I'm reading says I need a clean installation in order to transition from XP 32-bit to W7 64-bit but I think there is a piece I'm missing.

    Thanks for any help.

Maybe your processor doesn't support 64 bit. How old is it? What type? Name and brand.

Hmmmmm! Yes it supports 64. Sounds like a disc problem. Check it on another rig if you can just to see if it will load. That will tell you if the disc is the problem....

Unplug all external devices you have attached to your PC, its easy to overlook USB devices, such as printers, USB drives, etc. Of course not keyboard or mouse but all other devices. Manytimes they cause problems during the boot cycle.

I just tried the disc in my Fiance's PC and it booted just fine. I think the problem may either be some BIOS setting or the fact that I'm using a wireless keyboard.

So, I'm trying the wired keyboard now to see if the start-up will recognize my key press.

That was the problem -- the wireless keyboard.
