I just ordered a dell 6000d with a DVD burner that I hope to use to back up some of my DVD collection. I was just wondering if anyone could reccomend a good DVD software suite for backing up DVDs. Also is there a way to convert DIVIX files so I can play them on a regular DVD player?

yea....DVD shrink works for me for backing up and for converting DivX to work on a dvd player...there's a program called IMtoo mpeg encoder...or sumting like that...it will convert a 700 MB divx file into a 2 GB UDF file...but wen u burn it on a DVD+R....it still works in the DVD player

For making compressed backups of the whole DVD (features and all), you might be able to get your hands on DVDXCopy, but only if you download it. It's not at retail stores anymore. Otherwise, there are a few more programs that are similar to DVDXCopy, they just never got as well known. 1ClickDVDCopy comes to mind. That is supposed to be faster, but it all depends on the length of the movie and speed of your burner/discs.

You can also do the same thing in a few more steps. Use DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and then burn the image to a DVD. I'm not sure if those programs let you burn images, but Nero or Alcohol 120% will let you.

If you want to do DVD to XVid/DivX (which is nice for laptops, so you don't have to drag a bunch of DVDs with you when you leave or waste space on the harddrive with nearly 5GB per movie), I recommend (and will never stop recommending) FairUse Wizard.

I wrote a step-by-step tutorial for FairUse, which is now posted on my cousin's website, http://ppcpathways.com

This is a direct link to the article.

FairUse is an awesome program, I suggest it to everyone who is doing DVD to XVid or DivX conversions.
